Prehung Door or Door Slab: Define the Replacement

A slab replacement and a prehung replacement involve different parts of the doorway. Identify what should remain before comparing proposals so one price is not mistaken for the same scope as another.

Understand the decision

The existing frame may be sound, damaged or unsuitable for the new door. Trim condition and wall connections affect restoration as well. A prehung assembly includes a frame arrangement, while a slab needs coordination with the retained opening and hardware.

Compare your options

Slab-only replacement

Keep a suitable existing frame and replace the door itself.

Keep in mind Hinge, latch and trimming compatibility need careful review.

Prehung assembly

Replace the door with its specified frame arrangement.

Keep in mind Removal and restoration can extend into casing and adjoining finishes.

Focused repair

Retain the current door when adjustment or selected component work meets the goal.

Keep in mind Wear or geometry may limit the achievable result.

Plan the details

Examine what is being retained before comparing replacement options. An existing frame may have a useful finish or profile, but its condition and compatibility with a new slab need review. A prehung assembly includes a frame relationship that can affect adjoining trim and wall restoration. Identify the door’s swing, hardware requirements and the finished floor connection. Product dimensions should be checked against the actual opening by the responsible installer before purchase. Include painting or staining and any surrounding repair in the written scope. A nominal door size alone does not describe the whole replacement. Keep the approved product and opening record linked so a later delivery question is not answered from a general room label.

Before work begins

  • Photograph both sides of the opening.
  • Identify casing you want retained.
  • Record swing direction and existing hardware information.

Agree the sequence

  1. Assess the frame condition.
  2. Compare the complete replacement options.
  3. Approve restoration and finish responsibilities before ordering.

Avoid common problems

Do not compare slab and prehung prices without accounting for removal, casing, hardware and paint. Older openings can require additional review that is not visible in a retail product description.

Review the result

Check operation and the restored wall-to-trim connections. Confirm whether final painting includes the complete doorway or only new components and retain the installed product record.

Homeowner questions

Is a slab always the cheaper complete solution?

Not necessarily. Fitting and restoration needs vary with the opening. Compare the finished installed scope rather than product price alone.

Does replacing only the slab mean no surrounding work is needed?

Not automatically. Fit, hardware, frame condition and finish compatibility require review. Confirm what is included for the actual opening rather than assuming a smaller product purchase defines the entire installation scope.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Discuss your project

Explain why the door is being changed and what should stay. Ask for the included doorway components to be listed clearly.
